Varanasi is a city that I’d heard about many times in the past; the most important city to Hindus and the place where all of them want to die. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and as we got down from the train we were greeted by hundreds of locals who wanted to talk to us, take pictures of us or simply take us to our hotel. This was without a doubt the most crowded city we visited in all of India.
Varanasi is well known because it’s the most famous city among Hindus, they live a sacred life and once they feel their time is coming they come to die here; they are cremated and then they are left to float among the Ganges river until they are no longer seen. This is the most sacred ritual among Hindus, which is why many of them even bathe here many times in their lives, it makes them feel cleansed. But what is most impressive is the amount of people that come here every day, weather it’s tourists or locals, Varanasi is a holy place in India and is worth the visit. It’s a ceremony worth seeing once in your life to truly understand the customs and ways of living of Hindus.
On the other hand this city is a little hectic, it’s thousands of little streets and alleys that lead from one point of the city to another. There are hundreds of little cafes, restaurants and hotels where you can stay, and something quite popular are stores and places where Hindus buy decorations and materials to decorate their beds to be cremated. It’s a very confusing city and you can get lost quite easily so if I were you I’d ask someone local to help you get around (this saved us many times) or download a map of the city to know where you’re going. The city is big and it’s pretty probable you’ll get lost if you don’t know your way around.
In my opinion this city is quite big, full of people, cows and rituals going on all day long. Wherever you turn you can see a new ceremony or a custom that you’ve never seen before. But I loved being able to learn so much about Hindus and their traditions. I believe it’s amazing how little we can sometimes know about other cultures in the world, they are all so unique and we should definitely try to learn more every day especially while traveling.
If Varanasi taught me anything it’s that there’s so much to learn out there; in new countries, cultures & traditions. Varanasi has an essence that very few cities (if not none) have; it’s chaotic but people are so peaceful here. It’s too rich to even describe, and it’s a city you have to live to fully understand.
Varanasi es una ciudad de la cual había escuchado mucho en el pasado; la ciudad más importante para los Hindúes y donde todos ellos quieren ir a morir. Llegamos un Jueves por la tarde en tren y al bajar de él nos encontramos con un río de personas; todas muy impresionadas por nuestra apariencia, nos querían preguntar cosas, tomarse fotos con nosotros, llevarnos a nuestro hotel o simplemente platicar con nosotros. Esta sin duda fue la ciudad más caótica de la India que visitamos.
Varanasi es conocido porque aquí es donde las personas de la religión Hindú vienen a morir, son cremados cerca del río Ganges, y al final son llevados al río el cual se los lleva a otra vida. La mayoría de los hindúes vienen aquí y se bañan en el río varias veces (a pesar de que el río Ganges es el río más contaminado del mundo por las cremaciones) para poder santificarse, es todo un ritual para ellos. Pero lo más impresionante es la cantidad de personas que vienen aquí diario, ya sea a observar este ritual o a acompañar a algún conocido a que cumpla con este mismo. Es un espectáculo que deja tanto a turistas como a locales muy impresionados, y vale la pena verlo una vez en tu vida.
Por el otro lado la ciudad es todo un tema, son cientos de calles y callejones estrechos llenos de pequeños hoteles y tiendas con materiales para adornar a las personas que necesitan colores y decoraciones en sus camas mientras cumplen con el ritual. Se puede decir que esta ciudad es todo un laberinto, así que les recomiendo pedirle a un local que los lleve a donde quieran ir o descarguen indicaciones de internet, ya que nosotros nos perdimos más de una vez y es casi imposible saber cómo regresar.
Varanasi en lo personal se me hizo una ciudad muy atiborrada y llena de demasiada gente, vacas y rituales. A donde quiera que voltees hay un nuevo suceso, grupo religioso o costumbre completamente diferente. Pero me encantó poder aprender más acerca del
Hinduismo y de sus costumbres. Creo que es impresionante como en el mundo hay todo tipo de tradiciones y todas son únicas y diferentes.
Si algo nos dejó Varanasi fue que hay que estar abiertos a que no todas las ciudades son iguales, muchas de ellas tienen su esencia y sin duda que Varanasi es diferente a todas las ciudades que he visitado antes. Te da un sentimiento de caos y frustración, pero al ver a los Hindúes tan tranquilos y confiando tanto en su destino te hace querer ser más como ellos. Esta ciudad me enseñó a confiar y a observar antes de juzgar, espero algún día poder regresar a esta ciudad tan rica en cultura e historia.
