I’d never been to the Middle East before so when we arrive to Doha I didn’t know what to expect at all. We were only in town for 2 days because we decided to use our layover here as an excuse to visit this city and learn a little bit about its culture. So after we exited the airport we had 2 days to discover the capital of Qatar and what it had to offer.
First we decided to visit the Souq Waqif, which is a famous outdoor market where you can buy typical crafts and clothes from the Middle East; this is a great place to truly admire the type of culture and customs that are practiced here in Qatar. We ate some dates, bought some lovely jewelry and even tried some fresh made mint tea. I really recommend this being your first stop if you’re ever here, so you can adapt and learn a little bit more about the city on your own. At night we ate at a local restaurant and had the unique chance of trying a real Hookah (they are very popular here) , we tried many flavors and really enjoyed getting to learn about Doha’s popular nighttime activities.
The next day we visited the Museum of Islamic art, which is one of the most famous spots of the city; here you can overlook Doha’s skyline and really admire the city’s infrastructure from afar. The museum has various expositions and art pieces that make it very interesting and you can learn a lot about islamic customs. But what was really the cherry on top on our visit to Doha was the expedition to the Sand Dunes; we rented a tour that took us all the way to the dunes from the city and it was quite memorable! Here you ride the dunes from bottom to top and it’s quite a thrill seeker! We couldn’t stop shouting and screaming from the adrenaline rush!
At the end of the excursion we had a picnic at the seaside in the dunes and you could see all the stars above you! This was without a doubt a great way to end a day in such a new and exciting country! What we loved about Doha was the people and service, and how kind they all were to us! We really enjoyed being able to meet new customs and habits and to really learn about Middle Eastern way of life! Doha was without a doubt a destination as they say short but sweet, hopefully one day we’ll be able to return with more time to explore everything it has to offer.
Nunca antes había ido a un país del Medio Oriente, así que cuando llegamos a Doha no sabía realmente qué esperar de este país. Solo íbamos a estar por 2 noches en la ciudad, ya que decidimos alargar nuestra escala y aprovechar para conocer esta ciudad y un poco más acerca de la cultura del Medio Oriente. Así que cuando salimos del aeropuerto todos estábamos muy emocionados por ver qué nos iba a ofrecer la ciudad.
Primero decidimos visitar el Souq Waqif, que es un mercado al aire libre muy conocido en la ciudad. Aquí las personas vienen a comprar productos hechos a mano, especias y comida típica de la región. Nosotros aprovechamos para poder conocer un poco más acerca de los productos más conocidos en Qatar y comprar algunos de ellos como joyería hecha aquí, dátiles y té de menta. En la noche fuimos a un restaurante que servía comida local y hasta probamos una Hookah original de la región (aquí son muy populares), nos dieron a probar muchos sabores y nos encantó poder experimentar una tradición tan típica de Qatar.
El día siguiente visitamos el Museo de arte Islámico, que es uno de los puntos turísticos más famosos de la ciudad. Aquí hay varias exposiciones y obras que ofrecen un poco de historia acerca del Islamismo y cómo esta religión ha ido cambiando a través de los años. Lo mejor del museo sin duda alguna es su vista, ya que está construída frente a la vista entera de la ciudad y te deja admirar su inmensidad por completo! Pero lo que más nos gustó de todo nuestro viaje a Qatar sin duda fué ir a las dunas de arena en camionetas! Rentamos un tour que nos llevó desde la ciudad hasta las dunas y fue toda una experiencia! Te llevan entre cientos de ellas y hay subidas y bajadas enormes! De verdad se te sume el estómago de ver por donde te van a llevar! Es toda una aventura!
Al final de la excursión tuvimos un picnic al lado del mar en un campamento, aquí cenamos y pudimos ver una infinidad de estrellas que estaban encima de nosotros! Sin duda una de las mejores formas de acabar nuestra visita express a un país tan diferente pero tan interesante! Doha nos enseñó mucho y a pesar de que solo estuvimos muy poco tiempo nos dejó muy picados con el Medio Oriente y sus costumbres y estilo de vida. Esperemos poder regresar pronto durante más tiempo para poder aprender más acerca de estos países tan interesantes.
