I’d heard about Cambodia since I was little, my mother used to tell us that it was one of her top bucket list places, she’s always loved ruins, something about a country’s history and ancient temples always make her excited. That’s why Cambodia was our next stop during this South East Asia trip. We landed in Siem Reap at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon; you could see all the temples and treetops from the the plane’s window. We stayed at the Raffles hotel, located at the center of the town, which was great because we were not very far from all the ruins, restaurants & markets.
We visited Siem Reap on Christmas season so it’s safe to say there were a lot of tourists around which was great and not so great at the same time. We loved having Christmas dinner outside of our home, we’d never done it & we were able to experience a completely different evening, besides, when do you get the chance to eat turkey & sushi in the same Christmas Dinner? The only downside was that being away from home after such a long time (6 months for me) made you yearn for your family that night, especially for the vibe that Christmas makes you feel.
The good part of Siem Reap are one thing: it’s ruins (check out my Top 3 Ruins in Siem Reap to know more about them!) Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple & Ta Prohm are only a few of the hundreds of ruins you can find in Siem Reap, but if you’re planning a visit soon I definitely recommend checking these ones out. Another highlight of our trip would definitely be a lunch we had at the “Malis” restaurant, it was a combination of modern and high quality Cambodian cuisine cooked by the famous chef Luu Meng. We had one of the best meals on our trip, some of the dishes we ordered even had fried ants! (yes ants) and to be honest they were quite delicious! Cambodia was a completely different experience for us; it’s temples, markets and food left us extremely happy & the people and service we experienced was spectacular. This was a Christmas we will definitely be having a hard time topping off.

Había escuchado de Camboya desde que era chica, mi mamá siempre nos decía que era uno de los lugares a los que más quería ir en su vida, siempre la han encantado las ruinas, yo creo que su amor por ellas tiene que ver con cómo empezó una civilización y cuál fue su historia. Es por eso que Camboya definitivamente era una de nuestras paradas en este viaje al Sudeste de Asia. Aterrizamos en Siem Reap como a las 3 de la tarde; podías ver todos los templos y las copas de los árboles desde la ventana del avión. Nos quedamos en el hotel Raffles, lo cual fue excelente ya que las ruinas nos quedaban muy cerca y el mercado y los restaurantes locales también.
Visitamos Siem Reap en la temporada de Navidad así que puedo decir con certeza que había muchos turistas en nuestro hotel y en las ruinas, lo cual fue bueno y no tan bueno al mismo tiempo. Nos encantó pasar Navidad fuera de nuestra casa, nunca lo habíamos hecho y vivimos una experiencia completamente diferente; dime tú, cuándo puedes cenar sushi y pavo en la misma cena Navideña? Lo único malo de Navidad fuera de casa fue el hecho de que ya llevábamos muchos meses fuera de casa (yo llevaba 6) y esa noche sí sentimos una nostalgia por nuestra familia y por estar con ellos.
La parte buena de Siem Reap es una cosa: sus ruinas! (Checa mi post de las Top 3 Ruinas en Siem Reap para conocer más sobre ellas!) Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple & Ta Prohm son solo algunas de los cientos de ellas y podrías pasar semanas o hastas meses conociendo todos los templos y construcciones que hay, todas son tan diferentes y están hechas de todo tipo de materiales, alturas y ángulos!
Otro de los momentos más padres de nuestro viaje a Camboya fue una comida que tuvimos en el restaurante “Malis”, fué una combinación de comida Camboyana con comida moderna cocinada por el famoso chef Luu Meng. Tuvimos unas de las mejores comidas de todo nuestro viaje por Asia, algunos platillo hasta tenían hormigas fritas (sí, dije hormigas!) y para ser honesta estaban deliciosas! Camboya fue una experiencia totalmente diferente para nosotros, la comida, los templos, y los mercados nos dejaron sumamente felices! El servicio y las personas que conocimos fue espectacular! Esta definitivamente fue una Navidad que va a ser casi imposible superar!
