10 Things I wish people would stop saying about Mexico

I’ve always been in love with my country, for its culture, history, landscape, food and especially for its people. And as I’ve had the blessing to travel the world I’ve also had the opportunity to hear what people think about Mexico and the stereotypes it has. So here’s 10 things I’ve heard more than once that I feel people should stop staying about Mexico:

1. “It’s insecure”. Sure like any other country Mexico has had its ups and downs with insecurity. But if you’re cautious and take care of yourself (like in any other country) there’s almost a guarantee you will not experience any insecurity issues.
2. “People use burros as transport.” This one (believe it or not) I’ve heard several times! Mexican people DO NOT move in burros, in fact this animal has never been used as transportation, horses have been but that was hundreds of years ago (some people still use them but not primarily).
3. “Tequila’s all you can drink.” Sure we all are pretty proud of our Tequila, and yes there is a town called Tequila in Jalisco. But there are plenty of other things to drink in our country.
4. “Mexico is the same as Spain right?” The answer to this is a definite NO, Mexico was colonized by Spain hundreds of years ago, but besides that Mexico and Spain vary in hundreds of ways. The only similarity is our language and even there some words and expressions are completely different, not to mention the accent.
5. “There are no big cities in Mexico!” This one is definitely one I’ve heard and completely disagree. Mexico City is the 5th biggest city in the world, and let’s not forget other beautiful cities like Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Queretaro, and many others…
6. “Mexico is behind in architecture and technology.” People believe we are indeed, behind, but what they don’t see is the hundreds of companies that are moving their headquarters to Mexico because of our people, our land and the hard work we put into our work.
7. “All you eat is tacos.” This one is even funny to me, Mexico is one of the richest countries when it comes to Gastronomy. Mexico has 3 of the Top 50 Restaurants in the world; and let’s not forget about the hundreds of dishes our country has to offer.
8. “Mexican people all look the same.” If you’ve ever been to Mexico you know this statement is completely wrong; Mexico is every day more diverse and more connected, making it’s people not only look different but also act and think in a unique way.
9. “Mexico is only desert, it all looks the same.” This is definitely a stereotype that movies have enforced to our country, if you’ve ever been here you know that we have everything here; from transparent beaches, to green forests, long deserts, huge cities, and hundreds more.
10. “Mexico is just the same to any other Latino country.” Yes, we are very proud of our Latin heritage; but Mexico, just as any other country is unique. It has its own culture, traditions and spirit, and comparing it to any other country is wrong.

I do know many of this stereotypes have been said out of ignorance and many times out of doubt, but I hope that while reading this you’ll discover what a rich and different country Mexico is; and hopefully one day you’ll be able to visit it to prove all that was stated above.

Siempre he estado enamorada de mi país, por su cultura, su historia, su comida, sus tradiciones y en especial por su gente. Mientras he tenido la oportunidad de viajar por el mundo he podido escuchar lo que las personas piensan de mi país, y con eso he escuchado muchos estereotipos erróneos de el. Así que aquí les dejo 10 cosas que las personas deberían de dejar de decir de México:

1. “Es un país muy inseguro.” Claro, como todos los otros países México ha tenido altos y bajos con la seguridad, pero cabe mencionar que si estas con cuidado (como en cualquier otro país) este es tan seguro como cualquiera y es muy probable que no te pase nada nunca.
2. “Los burros son el transporte de las personas.” Esta (aunque no lo crean) la he escuchado muchas veces, los burros NO son el transporte de los mexicanos, hace muchos años eran los caballos principalmente, y algunas personas los siguen utilizando, pero nunca a los burros.
3. “Solo se toma Tequila.” Claro que todos los mexicanos estamos muy orgullosos de  nuestro Tequila, y sí, viene de un pueblo que se llama Tequila, pero no es lo único que tomamos aquí.
4. “¿México y España es lo mismo no?” La respuesta a esto es un definitivo NO, para muchas personas (que al parecer no lo saben) México fue colonizado por España hace cientos de años, y desde 1810 México es un país libre. Claro que hablamos el mismo idioma, pero hay cientos de frases y el acento que nos diferencian hasta en eso.
5. “No hay ciudades grandes en México.” Para los que no lo sabían la Ciudad de México es la 5a más grande del mundo; y no olvidemos que hay muchas otras ciudades grandes en el país como Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Querétaro, y muchas otras.
6. “México está atrasado en tecnología y en ciencias.” Esta definitivamente sorprende ya que cada año cientos de empresas y compañías se han expandido e inclusive mudado a México por los avances tecnológicos y por la capacidad intelectual de los mexicanos.
7. “Solo comes tacos en México.” Claro, todos sabemos que los tacos son la especialidad de los mexicanos, pero es un error decir que aquí solo se come eso. México es uno de los países más ricos en gastronomía, contamos con 3 de los Top 50 restaurantes del mundo, y nuestra comida siempre ha fascinado a la gente.
8. “Las personas mexicanas son todas iguales.” México cada vez es un país más diverso y único, cada vez nos globalizamos más y esto significa que nuestras gente cada vez es más diversa y única.
9. “En México solo hay desiertos, todo es igual.” Esta es una de las más equivocadas, con cientos de playas transparentes, bosques, montañas, volcanes y ciudades México es un país extremadamente diverso y diferente.
10. “México es igual a cualquier otro país Latino.” Todos los países latinos nos relacionamos, pero es importante mencionar que todos somos únicos y tenemos detalles que nos hacen ser diferentes.

Yo se que muchos de estos estereotipos han sido dichos por ignorancia o por duda, pero esperemos que con esto algunas de sus dudas hayan sido resueltas, y que si alguna vez vayan a México puedan darse cuenta de lo equivocadas que pueden estar las personas de un país.
